SpidermanActivision announced today that the latest Spiderman game, Spiderman: Web of Shadows, is official in the works from Shaba Games and Treyarch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP, Wii, DS and PC. Web of Shadows will apparently be a free-roaming, open-ended, action-adventure game set in New York. The game will combine traditional web slinging with customizable superpowers. The ground combat will work the same way as before, with the combo attacks, but the game will also put more of an emphasis on vertical combat, which means fighting bad guys while in the air. The one thing that sets this game apart from the previous games, is that you will now be able to choose how you want to play. You can be the friendly neighborhood Spiderman, or you can succumb to the dark side and ignore the missions. Marvel heroes and villains will appear in the game, and players will have the ability to change sides as they see fit.

No word yet on what exactly Spiderman will be going up against, but we know that it's a threat to the entire world. The trailer and single screenshot we've seen show New York buildings covered in a black ooze (Symbiote...?) It looks as though there are several "creatures" crawling alongside the building in the trailer, but no clue as to what they actually are. Check out the trailer and screenshot for yourself and form your own analysis:

Also, at Comic Con New York this week, Activision will be holding voiceover auditions for the game at their booth. Video of the performance will be posted on the Spiderman: Web of Shadows website, where the community will vote for who they want in the game.
