Grand Theft Auto 4 - Freezing Issues on PS3/360 UPDATE 3

Several gamers who have picked up Grand Theft Auto 4 today have unfortunately been receiving severe freezing issues with the game. Supposedly the game will freeze immediately after the opening cutscene, but some have been lucky enough to play for 5 minutes or so. Earlier today, QJ.net falsely reported that the problem is exclusive to the PS3 version of the game, however both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 forums have had more than one thread dedicated to the issue. It's safe to say that the issue is in the game itself. Personally, we haven't had any problems with either of them, but there have certainly been enough people that have to call this a serious problem. Rockstar has been getting calls about this all morning and just about everyone has been given the same response: "We're working on it". A fix will be coming, we just don't know how soon. We'll let you know when an official statement has been issued.

Update #3: May 10 - While the patch has fixed the freezing issue for several people, it apparently hasn't fixed it for everyone. The problem persists with quite a few people all over different forums. Rockstar has released an official statement for these people, claiming that it's not the game's fault and it's their PS3 instead. Read More.

Update #2: May 7 - A patch has been released today for the PS3 version of the game which fixes the freezing issue, along with all multiplayer connection issues. Now you should no longer have any trouble with the game locking up, and getting online to play should no longer be a problem.

Update: Rockstar has officially stated that they are aware of the problem and that a fix is underway as we speak. We weren't told when we could expect it, but knowing Rockstar it will be very soon. In the meantime, some things that have been said to help the freezing are:

Set the video settings to 720 and use component cables instead of HDMI
Clear the disk cache / Game Data Settings (not save data)
Turn off the auto save function and the controller vibration setting
Update the system to the latest firmware

I've waited forever to grab hold of a 360 so I can play the new GTA 4. IM a GTA Nut. I have all of them including the first one that was banned then later put back on the shelves.

All my other 360 games work and work just fine. I have the arcade version with the BenQ dvd-rom drive. I'm very disappointed that the game locks up at just about anytime. I think only once I played for 4 hours then turned it off. But usually it locks up about 10-25 min of gameplay. I think I know most of the missions well because i've played them over and over due to the crashes.

The only thing I can really think of is the BenQ Rom-drive stinks.

I have the same problem. I have GTA 4 for XBOX 360 and it constantly freezes on me. There is nothing more frustrating than almost completing a mission and the game freezes and you have to start over. I'm only at 57% of the game because of this. This would be an otherwise perfect game.

I know it's not my XBOX because no other games have problems.

I have also emailed Rockstar (they guarantee a response within 24 hours) and I've heard nothing from them (it's been over a week). I can't exchange the game because I had it for 3 months before I started playing it (had to finish GOW 2 and COD first).

What's more frustrating is Rockstar won't even acknowledge the problem or come up with a patch to fix :(

Mine has broken my 360, 3 rings death, gotta be GTA caz game kept freezin my console. they should checked it on many machines before release.

Pure BS...just bought GTA4 yesterday played about 20 minutes in, dropped off the cousin at the hardware store (see I can't even play it long enough to know the F'N names of the characters!!) and it crashes everytime same spot. Of the 6 attempts to get through the stupid mission without it freezing, one time did it manage to keep going.....10 minutes later....f'n freezing again. What's the deal Rockstar. Patch for 360 soon? If not, you just lost a customer. All my other 360 games work fine...so don't tell me it's my 360.

Sout africa i have the 40gb ps3 playing through about 80% 19days nonstop. And freeze time hit me a fullformat do not work.so new ps3 is on the way

yeah this is bullshit. I bought this thing twice now and the same fucking thing. Disk Unreadable after about 5 minutes. It doesn't fucking matter if I am connected or not. This game is a fucking piece of shit!

WELL, I have been playing the game since it came out, I beat it, got both endings, I'm at about 75% completed, and now everytime I go load the game THE FREAKING 360 TELLS ME THE DISC IS UNREADABLE!!!!!1 WTF the disc is as brand-new as it gets!!!

mine freezes up on gta4 360 every time replaced the disk 3 times still locks up soo i opened up the 360 cleaned it out plays longer now but it still freezes took it to my friends plays fine soo i ordered a dvd drive for my box ill let you no if it freezes when i get it but i am sure it will.

When i got GTA IV i decided it was best to start off doing what i love in the GTA games. So i cheat-spawned a heli and started racking up stars and running around all crazy like. Turns out though, my game freezes EVERY time i try to leave the starting island. I havent read anybody with this same problem. Any help?

Well yip cheat and spawned al over liberty city.got 5o pigeons a long site the thing is i do not know and then al is a mest up.your ps3 a 40gb.

disconnecting from the network doesn't work for all.
it looks like my ps3's laser has been killed. gta4 did not freeze, and i have seen no problems during play; just then my ps3 died and won't read any form of disk. anyone have a similar problem?

Ive never been so annoyed in all my fat life!!!! This hunk of turd should have never left the shelves if it wasnt finished properly....Ive tried every single thing to make it stop....BUT NO! FIX IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

okay....now where is the patch for the 360 version? I get disc unreadable every time I cross the bridge on "final destination" mission. This is BS. So Rockstar is blaming the PS3 for the problems and just ignoring the 360 problems? F 'em.

God knows I can't get my money back for this game, or rather what has turned into a $60 coaster. I could sell it back to gamestop, but that would just screw over someone else.

You're telling me, the 360 version that I played back in May of 2008 choked up several times but it was playable in the end. When my brother sold his 360, I went and got a PS3 recently and traded my 360 version for a used PS3 version. Man, that disc is shit! I'm hoping it's not the PS3's fault, cause the PS3 I purchased was also used, too.

dude u r so right.mi gta keeps freezing every 5 seconds and its pissing me off. i bought it 3 times and its the same BS.like u said they should fix the problems on not only the PS3 but the xbox 2 and I say they should stop talking and fix the dam problem.

I bought two games and both freeze, sometimes b4 u play and sometimes during play, thought I was bloody unlucky until now!!!! What a bloody rip off!!!!! Never had the problem with any other game. Its all just a con!

Try Unplugging Your Netowrk Cable From The Back. The Freeze is related to online play.

sign out of the play station network, then load the game up, it'll work just fine, minus the online play.

This works for my PS3 80GB, just turn on your PS3 to the XMB, and sign out of the playstation network, then load the game... no more freezing! Let me know if anyone has tried this and its worked successfully!

i have a 360 and the game does it everytime i play....either an unreadable disk message or it just freezes up despite doing everything that has been sugested. brill!

I am having the ssame problem the odd time we will be able to play for 30min to 1 hour but most of the time it freeses like 5 min into the game i turn it off then i turn it back on but then it says ''system error has occured'' plz get a recall on the game i really wanna play.

oh well, at least call of duty still works... INFINITY WARD > ROCKSTAR

same problem except i was 39% into my game.. i deleted all my game saves and data thinking i used the cheat codes too many times or something but im not even able to start a new game

My freezes on random areas/missions. Was at 40% when the problem started : < It's not my 360 cause if I take out the cd it goes to the dashboard and everything is fine....

i got 360 n mine freezez everytime but the same disk works on my friends 360 console

just switch off the auto login and the problem fixes easy as that!

I have the 40 GB PS3 and mine is stuck on the loading screen after playing through about 8% of the game. I did get it to boot once after reinstalling the game to the HD, but it froze within 5 minutes and now is back to not loading again.

I had exactly the same problem mate !!! After i got 8.4% completion it stops working at the loading screen "Do you have protection" (mission) must be something wrong with the disk etc. Hopefully a patch will fix an otherwise brilliant game......

yeah mine keeps freezing also, i have a 60gb ps3. the game gets to the loading screen where the name of the most recently completed mission is at the bottom and just stops. and the odd time i actually get to play it freezes after a few minutes. please fix quick please please please
