Grand Theft Auto 4 - PS3 and Xbox 360 differences explained UPDATE 2

Update #2: April 25 - A while back we posted this article (which was found to be completely fake) claiming that the Xbox 360 version was superior to the PS3 version. You can read that below, if you'd like. Well, today we have the official verdict on which version is really better, straight from IGN's review of the game.

"Past GTA titles have had mild-to-serious framerate issues and technical glitches, because the games were trying to do far more than the PlayStation 2 could handle. While GTA IV is pushing the PS3 and 360 to the limit, it also runs amazingly well. Sure, there are framerate hitches here and there and (particularly on 360) there is some texture pop-in, but it actually runs better than I expected."

"those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner. Because GTA IV can preload onto the PS3 hard drive, the in-game loads are faster. Don't worry Xbox owners, the load times are rarely more than 30 seconds and don't occur very often. The slight visual edge goes to PS3, but the 360 is no slouch. Either version will do you proud."

So, it turns out that it's completely the opposite of what was stated before and the PS3 version is technically better. The game is still said to run very well on both systems, so the whole argument isn't that big of a deal anyway. Just buy the game for whichever system and know that you don't have to worry about any major problems on either of them.

March 5 - Rockstar's Neil Corbett (the lead QA for Rockstar's GTA4) commented today on the differences between the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Grand Theft Auto 4.

"Hello, as it stands the Xbox 360 version has the smoother framerate & far faster loading times (without any installing) but the PS3 version does have that warm feeling with bleached out sunsets & the like. The extra content of the 360 version is significant but nothing like an 'extra Island' at all- as the lead platform it is currently the superior version however. Just you wait until your first windscreen-flying experience."

As was said before, the Xbox 360 will have more vibrant colors, whereas the PS3 version will be more washed out but more realistic at the same time. The slower framerate and loading on PS3 is definitely a blow for Sony fans, especially considering all the extra DLC that is also coming exclusively to the Xbox 360.

Still, play it for yourself and see how big of a deal it really is. IGN stated (via their GameScoop podcast) that both versions run just as smooth, so who knows.

Update: Alright, turns out this whole thing was a fake. A Rockstar spokesperson has declared that the poster Neil Corbett from the rllmuk forums (where this all originated from) was not Rockstar North's Neil Corbett. Sorry for the confusion on that one. Now as far as we know, both versions are the same performance-wise.

o ya i have the ps3 and x box 360 elite and normal i was loving xbox like my mom but when i saw that ps3 has the blu ray and 80 gb and thier some thing no body knows the ps 3 can actually play online by puting the internet wire in it and selecting multiplayer online

Seriously, people are lying about this. I shouldn't have bought a PS3 for it. I'm gonna go ahead and give it an honest review here, even though nobody's gonna read it; I just gotta vent because it is by no means perfect.

Graphics: 9/10

It's a sweet looking game, no doubt about that - hence the high 9. But there are nicer looking games. Take a look at Crysis.

Gameplay: 8/10

Okay, the main qualm here is the FRAMERATE. All the reviewers were blatantly lying about how well it handles - IT DOESN'T. It really slows down bad when a couple of cops are after you, or during a heavy shoot out. Blowing shit up slows it down, too, and it's hardly minor like most mainstream reviewers were making it out to be. Apart from that, the driving camera is freaking annoying and they should have allowed you to have better control of it with the right analog (meaning it shouldn't auto center all the time). Furthermore, Niko's walking pace sucks. Sure you can use the 'X' button to make him run, but during gun fights you can't because then you cant control the aiming with the right analog. Other than these mentioned, it's sweet.

Sound: 10/10

Guns sound wicked as do the cars and environments. Great soundtrack, too.

Tilt: 8/10

This would be higher, provided the game didn't have that horribly BAD framerate issue! Also, for the most part, there's nothing new here - it's just GTA end of the day. All the missions I've done so far (40+) have the same old feel to them. It literally feels like you've played each one before whether it's chasing a helicopter or bombing a factory. Same old, same old, been there, done that. Admittedly, I haven't played the multiplayer yet ('cause I'm afraid of that freezing issue with the PS3), so I'm not including that in the review. This is only in regard to the single player.

Value: 9/10

This is essentially because of the multiplayer (even though I haven't played it). I'm assuming it's good enough to give it a 9. Sounds like a very replayable fun thing to do!

Overall: 8.8/10 = 88%

is anybody concerned with the fact the GTA 4 on either system...blows!!! Don't LIE you know you dissapointed when you beat the game in under 30 hours....achievement WHORES. The story SUCKS, I could care less if Niko lived or died unlike CJ and Tommy. No tanks, no planes no army?!?!?! I wasted 60 bucks on a over hyped game. Please believe that its going to traded in towards my Gears 2 Resevation....360 FTW!!!

GTA was originally a PC and PS1 game, not just PC.
PS1 also had 'GTA London', and it wasnt until GTA2 that it started to branch out onto other platforms.....

Dont know why everyone is getting worked up over downloadable content that isnt gonna be ready until around Aug/Sept (if delivered on time). It has also been strongly suggested that the you will have to pay for the content.

Also, just because Xbox360 has 'exclusive' content, doesnt mean that there cant/wont be content for the PS3....it simply means that it can be the same content as the Xbox360, and most likely will appear on both platforms.

As for the people saying that PS3 is harder to program for....bollocks !! The PS3 is much more of an open platform than the Xbox360, and is technically superior.

It's a shame R* decided to make the DLC an Xbox360 exclusive. I'm going to have to get the 360 version now. Also the rumors about save game crashes on the PS3 don't help matters much either. I had the same problems with Soul Calibur 3, the save games would corrupt and eat my memory cards from the inside out. I've heard that Sony has since released a patch to "fix" this problem with GTA4, but they can't very well release a patch to make exclusive 360 comment magically appear on my PS3 and that's a bit of a letdown. Of course if you don't care about the DLC and have faith that your save games won't corrupt, I'd say the PS3 version is the way to go.

Hooray, Sony finally got there act together and released a patch to fix their broken version of GTA IV. As for the DLC, there are no plans for such a thing for the PS3. Saying so is simply conjecture.

all good xbox games come to pc, ps3 games dont. if you have a decent computer a ps3 is definitely the way to go... and anyone who downloads dlc is a tool, theyre really gouging with this dlc nonsense

I love to play online, so for those who prefer online after beating the campaign get xbxo 360 version... ps3 is so garbage online.. no1 talks... and it becomes boring in 1 minute after u get the game started. Why do people think the ps3 has no downloadable content? I have one and I've played at least 7 demos for awesome games, and I've gotten free maps for various online games. Seriously the ps3 store is great! And fast!

All the extra DL content will come to the ps3 as well.

although the ps3 version will be smoother and runs better, the xbox 360's dlc being worth 10-15 hours long, which is like a whole new chapter and clearly is a smarter schoice than a little smoother gameplay. Xbox 360 wins in this debate i think

Do you know what the downloadable content its yet? coz it aint been confirmed by rockstar yet. You never know but it may just be some new clothes or a new type of whore...

p.s. after several hours of vegging and looking at the differences between consoles, the PS3 version looks way better.

Don't forget one of the most important factors is this debate. You can actually hear the sound, without having to crank up the volume, because the game doesn't have to compete with the jet engine rivaling noise of the xbox 360...if you play the ps3 version that is ;P

The game was delayed all this time because of the xbox's hd dvd not being big enough. PS3 owners have been robbed, they should have released it on ps3 first & made a smaller version for xbox.

First of all, the x360 version is released on a DL DVD(8,54GB), not HD DVD(15GB).
And second of all, it was delayed because of some issues with the PS3 version of the game according to R*.
So if they where to release the game one version before the other, i think we would have the x360 version in late '07.
But i'm glad they didn't do that, since i bought my PS3 for GTA IV and GT5.
It would suck if i had to buy a x360 as well, since i would not be able to wait 6 months while x360 owners could play GTA IV.

listin the playstation3 was held back because of the xbox, they cant do what they really want to do because they want please eveybody and what better way to do that by makin the game as identical as possible.if gta4 was to go on the ps3 alone the game would ve been bigger and been able to fit on one disk!if you look at the exclusive titles for the ps3 and the 360 the games are bigger and look better on the playstation3. why? because its NOT BEING HELD BACK by a game that has to go on the 360 also! if call of duty 4 was an exclusive title for the ps3 it would've been longer than 4 hours and even more things on the screen at once( which is hard to beleave )the playstation3 can just do more when its not babysitting the 360 when games come out for both consoles! i know someone gonna say,well 360 games have look better in the past. well....... the key word is past, and those day are over. developers are learning how to finally tap into some power of the ps3 and its crazy what they've been able to do not knowing that much about the system at first, so imagine whats to come when they get it down pat! lets not forget the the 360 came out a full year before the ps3 and developers had dev kits a year before that! lets not be stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the ps3 a beast and the games are going to showcase that for the rest of the year! you need to do your home work if are truly a student a the game!

All the game titles you mentioned can be played on any cheaply build pc with better rendered graphics and performance. Basically the xbox360 is an over heated, noisy compacted pc with only (i think its now) 40gb hard disk space. The 360 was once good last year 2007, but you got to face it ps3 is standing out in 2008.

I did the same too had to get the 360 version because of damn microsoft and there biggest bribary yet according to what I know of them, I so felt like crying when I found this out but dumb ol sony got lazy and let 360 corner me so I'm forced to sell out as well and buy 360's version. hopefully I'll get the ps3 version later too if I want to replay the game but i've heard its a really long game plus all the dlc its highly unlikely. please update if you find out sony's ps3 did something because im willing to wait for the content but i need to know that there will be content as long as i dont have to wait too long.I'll shut up now.

i agree with you i have done the same... i pre ordered gta for ps3 then found out that ps3 HOME had been delayed until september at the earliest..... its a joke therfore i have cancelled my pre order for ps3 and am getting rid for the X360 as they do seem to be pulling away sony need to get it sorted out!

Well im switching to ps3, I love my xbox360 but I have to be honest, Im on my third xbox and my friend is still on his first ps3 from launch! plus im just going to say it, ps3 have better games coming out from now to the end of the year and with the exception of gears of war 2 the xbox is fallin off and very quick! sorry but i think sony will have prove me wrong, and others though will try to take up for the beloved 360, the truth will hurt like it hurt for the sony fans when their games started to look out dated toward the end against the original xbox. Well, Sony does not have the nice, neat DLC API that M.S. has been so nice to provide to 360 developers. So, I would not say that RockStar "Sold out" It is simply a matter of their Dev team not having either the experience, the know-how, or the will to write a Content Distribution System from scratch.
I know that if I was presented with a nice easy API on one console, and the prospect of building my own system for another console I would just say "screw it" and simply not use the feature on the console that was lacking.
